We are fortunate to have very experienced music tutors who are able to offer lessons in:

At Mount Maunganui College, we offer a variety of itinerant music lessons for students interested in learning an instrument or improving their vocal skills.
All students are welcome to sign up for these lessons. Beginner lessons are taught in small groups of up to 3 students, giving everyone the chance to learn in a supportive environment.
We have a limited number of spots available, and typically, we receive two to three times more registrations than we have hours to offer.
To manage this, we use the following system for allocation:
  1. Priority for music curriculum students: Students taking music as a curriculum subject get first priority. Senior students are allocated lessons first, as these lessons are essential for several of their internal assessments. After that, lessons are allocated to junior students in order of year level.
  2. Co-curricular involvement: Students involved in our co-curricular music programme are given the next level of priority.
  3. Remaining spots: Any remaining places are allocated to other registrants on a first-come, first-served basis.

Once lessons are full, any extra applications will be placed on a waiting list.
Each lesson is 20-30 minutes long and takes place during school hours, starting in February and running through November.

Co-curricular requirement

All students in the Itinerant Music Programme must join a co-curricular music group related to their instrument:

Beginners will join a group once their teacher feels they're ready.

Rules

Since the school covers the tuition costs, we ask that students commit to attending all scheduled lessons unless there’s a valid reason, like illness or an assessment clash. If a student can’t make it, they should let us know in advance by contacting the school office or emailing their itinerant teacher directly.

Students are expected to:

- Attend all lessons or notify us if they can’t.

- Practice between lessons.

- Bring their instrument and music to each lesson.

- Catch up on any classwork missed during their music lesson.

- Be prompt in leaving and returning to their regular classes.

Missing lessons not only affects the student's progress but also wastes resources, so students who miss too many without notice will lose their spot in the program.

How to sign up

To sign up for these lessons, please complete the Itinerant Lesson Enrolment Form and Contract here.

Applications close on February 9th, 2025. Lesson schedules will be emailed and posted on Google Classroom during the week of February 12th-16th, with lessons starting that same week.

Instrument Hire

If you need an instrument, the school offers rentals ranging for $25 per term. Talk to your itinerant or HOD Music to see what is available. Rentals are also available from private companies like KBB Music, Auckland Band Instruments, Rockshop, Musicworks, and Shearers Music.
